About the Studio

Studio 101 Designs believes that the places we live should be inspiring, functional and sustainable, with fluid connections between interior and exterior spaces. We believe in the beauty of raw materials and the ability of great craftsmanship to elevate the human spirit. We deliver the honesty of clear and simple design solutions to very complex problems and believe that there is an opportunity for design excellence in all projects - irrespective of size and budget. Working closely with clients, builders, and consultants, we design intuitive and thoughtful spaces using materials, methods, and forms that express their process and context.

We design solutions for traditional 'stick-built' custom homes as well as prefabricated modular structures. Our experience as prefab-green pioneers and collaboration with factory partners has convinced us that sustainable prefab modular building can be a feasible response to a client's needs and can also minimize some inefficiencies inherent in traditional construction methods.

For Studio 101 Designs, sustainability is inherent in thoughtful design. We choose to decipher the environmental context of each site to design buildings that are integrated into their particular setting. Our goal is to create living buildings and spaces that perform without an over-reliance on traditional environmental controls / energy sources - beyond mere legal requirements. We feel that it is our responsibility to change the way that we live to ensure the maintenance of the world's resources and health.

Scott Landry

President, Architect

Scott founded Studio 101 Designs in 2010 with a focus on beautiful, thoughtful, sustainable design and an unwavering commitment to client satisfaction. Since receiving degrees in Architecture and City Planning from the University of California at Berkeley, Scott has contributed to the successful completion of projects of all types and sizes, throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. He appreciates a hands-on approach to creating and working directly with expert tradespeople throughout the design and building process. He believes that the best design solutions are found together with the client, through a collaborative process, and in harmony with its location.

Prior to starting Studio 101 Designs, Scott served as director of architecture for the celebrated Bay Area firm Michelle Kaufmann Designs where he honed his craft and learned the value of building a strong, well-rounded team.

Scott fills his 'off-time' by rooting for his beloved Cal Bears and local high school teams, hacking his way around the golf links and if given the opportunity, traveling the world.

Aaron Wirth

Project Manager

Aaron is the product of his Colorado upbringing, where he was instilled with a fondness for the natural world and a desire to leave things better than he found them. He studied architecture of the University of Colorado's school of Environmental Design, there he participated in the NASHI service-learning program, a partnership between the Oglala Lakota College and the University of Colorado to address the lack of affordable, functional housing on tribal lands. Here he learned to bridge his conservationist instincts with the built environment. This combination of lived experiences and education has left him with a commitment to environmental stewardship and a passion for creating spaces that resonate with the people and places they serve.

Having left his hockey skates back home in 2015, you can now find Aaron navigating the hills of San Fransico on his bike or rock climbing around Northern California to pass the time when not in the studio.

James Kean

Design Lead

Born and raised in Iowa, James has been deeply influenced by the rural built environment. The efficiency, durability, and functional beauty of the Midwest buildings/landscape, which seemed to belong exactly in their place and perform exactly the function for which they were designed, imprinted James with the belief that the design of architecture is as much a cultural process as a material one.

James studied architecture at Iowa State University under a diverse faculty of gifted educators. Graduating in 2003, he spent a year in the field working for a local Iowa general contractor – further developing his passion for building and knowledge of the project delivery process. After making his way to the West Coast, James worked for firms in Fresno and Los Angeles gaining experience in a wide range of projects from elementary schools and hospitals to tenant improvements and furniture design. James comes to Studio 101 Designs after playing an integral role in growing one of the most acclaimed modular design/construction firms in the country, Michelle Kaufmann Designs.
